Reflective Report-OLE 1403

Before having this OLE, my understanding about the leadership was limited, that it
was mainly about utilising management skills and pushing community members to
reach goals. However, the course surprised me by its unique perspective about
leadership— from a humanity angle. Rather than simply allocating others separate
tasks, leader should have the ability to influence, motivate, and enable a group to
work towards the shared goals (Caprar,2018). It was not surprising that the course
also emphasized the importance of strategic direction to the leaders. Just as
Professor Roy Green (2013) suggested in the interview, a compelling direction is
always one of the most significant elements for a leader to successful leadership,
regardless of his systematic management education level.
After this course, I believe that the power of self-awareness and value demonstration
are essential for individuals to active leadership in daily life. This impacted me to get
through my experience about leadership from a deeper perspective. I organized a
cross-cultural communicate group which contained six members from various
countries who currently are living in Sydney. As organizing various group
communication activities, I had an impression that although in a diverse city, rumours
and prejudice between cultures are hard problems needed to be solved. Thus, I am
drawn to be a community leader as a chief organizer in the international non-profit
organizations, building bridges between different cultures.
Cross-cultural community needs me to be a leader who not only has the
aforementioned qualities, but also inspires others to deepen their understanding of
the global diversity. I would like to conduct this self-improvement process through
continually developing my cross-cultural communication group and creating a
boundless taking place effortlessly. Specifically, I would build a video-shooting team
to produce more culture introduction media works. Drawn to leaders introduced in
the course that they gained their success in quite different countries, ranging from
their homeland to developed or developing countries, I would let everyone realize the
importance of having a cross-cultural mind with great my efforts.

Reflective Report OLET1403
OLET1403 has enhanced my appreciation for leadership as a complex skill enabling me to
connect with others, influence attitudes and instigate change. It was unsurprising that a key
leadership skill was communication, but I was surprised by the depth to which this OLE
explored the complexity and powerful outcomes of communication. This module inspired me
to better engage and communicate with others by drawing upon self-awareness and active
listening to judge the emotions, perspectives and motivations of others. Practising this
fundamental skill will empower me to gain trust, relate to others and manage conflict. This
knowledge challenged my preconceived notion of leadership as a management position and
has transformed my appreciation for leadership as a highly relevant people-oriented skill with
powerful applications to both my personal and professional life.
Communication and boundary-crossing skills are critical to leadership in the scientific field,
particularly as the growing scientific illiteracy of the global community is an increasingly
pressing issue (Pozenel, 2018). We need scientific leaders to bridge the divide between
scientific and wider communities (Brookes, Wong & Ho, 2017), such as science
communicator Isabelle Kingsley and CEO of ANSTO Dr. Adi Paterson who are establishing
educational scientific programs with the general community (ANSTO, 2020). I am drawn to
these leaders as they express their vision to non-scientists and inspire action by
demonstrating powerful communication skills, integrity, and passion.
I feel passionate about engaging the community with science, and I would like to develop
relevant leadership skills to achieve this. My leadership development plan therefore involves
working in an interdisciplinary team and collaborating with school communities in the Sydney
University course ENGD3002. Additionally, as a current executive of the University of Sydney
Science Society I plan to initiate a discussion of ways that the team can generate interest in
scientific research amongst students from non-science backgrounds. I am keen to engage in
public speaking and volunteer activities.
Overall, this unit has inspired me to improve my personal relationships and career aspirations
through leadership.
