Assignment 1: Study of soil behaviour using Triaxial Data

Results from 4 Consolidated Drained triaxial tests on initially identical samples of a lime-
treated saturated clay are given in the accompanying Excel file. The Excel file has 4
worksheets, one for each test. The dimensions of each triaxial sample, its initial specific volume
and the confining pressure are given on the worksheets. The tests were conducted at four
different confining pressures 20, 100, 245 and 600 kPa.
Using the data given in the attached file,
- Calculate the soil elastic and plastic parameters in the context of the Cam clay model.
- Plot the Mohr circles and calculate the soil shear strength parameters c', ',
- Plot the stress paths (q:p’ plots and v:lnp’ plots) for the tests (up to the failure points),
- Plot all the relevant curves (stress-strain curves, variation of specific volume with axial strain,
critical state line, etc.) and determine the Cam clay parameters.
- Comment on the observed behaviour.
- Can the behaviour of this soil be represented by the Cam clay model?
The work should be clear and ordered. High marks will be given for clear discussions which
show evidence of further reading and an understanding of the characteristics and behaviour of
the soil tested.
The mark for this course work counts 30% towards the overall mark for this module.
