ESSAY DETAILS
Background: apps in the gig economy
Discourses encouraging personal entrepreneurship within the ‘gig economy1’ have become
increasingly prevalent due to the global economic crises that have arisen from the covid-19
pandemic. For example, many digital platforms display to their users posts about how they
can make 'things' (artworks, songs, meals etc.) and turn their hobbies into ‘side hustles’2.
There has also been a lot of discussion in the media about 'NFTs'
(nonfungible tokens). These are tokens which encode ownership of a
digital asset (e.g. an artwork) on a digital ledger known as the blockchain,
meaning that these assets can be sold for cryptocurrency.
Young people in particular are facing significant financial hardship.
Reporting has suggested that Gen Z has responded to economic crisis by
aspiring to make money via side hustles resulting in a problematic impact on their physical
and mental health. Read the following article and think about the social and ethical issues it
raises about personal entrepreneurship:
‘I'm a Gen Zer who graduated during the pandemic. Here's why I think my
generation's obsession with 'hustle culture' has become unhealthy.’

Essay question
Pick a side-hustle app and use it as a case study to explore the social and ethical issues that
are raised by apps that encourage people to participate in the gig economy. Use the
walkthrough method to explore your app and how it encourages its users to participate in
digital economies in particular ways. Your answer should consider the following questions that
were raised by Jenson in your week 1 reading:
“who does what, with whom, in which contexts, with what consequences
for communicators, the contexts, and the social relations which
communication helps to maintain?" (Jenson, 2013: 29-30).
Some examples of side-hustle apps can be found here:

1 The ‘gig economy’ is “a way of working that is based on people having temporary jobs or doing separate pieces of work, each paid separately, rather than working for an employer” (https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/gig-economy) 2 A ‘side hustle’ is “a piece of work or a job that you get paid for doing in addition to doing your main job” (https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/side-hustle).

You need to consider at least 3 social and ethical issues in your response (it doesn’t matter how many of each type but at least 3 in total and at least one of each).
WRITING GUIDE

Structure of your essay
Please note that this essay should not be a step-by-step walkthrough of the app. The
walkthrough is your investigation of the app and its logic which you do before writing the
essay. You use what you find in the walkthrough to help you to understand and analyse the
social and ethical issues regarding personal entrepreneurship that the app, as the object of
analysis in your case study, raises.

You should present your findings as an essay with the following structure:

1. Introduction:
• Explain the main social and ethical issues that your walkthrough analysis of
the app illuminated. These are the ideas which you will explore in the essay.

2. Body
• Explain the social and ethical issues you uncovered. Each paragraph should
deal with either a specific issue or part of an issue (if the ideas are too complex
to fit in one paragraph). Evidence from your walkthrough analysis should
appear in every paragraph.
• Be sure to justify each claim by referring to a dimension of the app’s design
(use diagrams, annotated screen captures etc. to help the reader understand
your analysis) or to the logic behind the app (e.g. as related to its governance).
• Do not simply narrate the flow of the app.
• Be sure that your paragraphs contain a topic sentence that indicates to the
reader the idea you are going to deal with in that paragraph. The rest of the
paragraph must apply sufficient analysis of specific examples to justify your
claim.

3. Conclusion
• Summarise your claims about the social and ethical issues you dealt with in
the essay. The conclusion is different to the introduction in the sense that you
can now leverage the outcomes of your analysis (as opposed to simply
introducing what you will explore).

How to include a screen capture or diagram in your essay
In order to explain your analysis, you will need to include diagrams and/or screen captures
in your essay. You should present these as figures with captions as follows:

Figure 1: Example of a screen capture of the Paprika recipe management app recipe page.

Depending on what you are explaining to the reader, you may like to annotate the screen
capture (e.g. with arrows and labels).

Use figures only when you are making a substantial point in your essay. You should limit this
to 3-4 figures maximum.

REFERENCING

Please support your arguments using references from outside the course readings. Include
at least 4 references from the course material (academic references from the readings,
lectures or tutorials). You should cite this material using Harvard referencing:
