ANIM5506 Term Paper Aim: 

To discuss, create and/or critique an integrated pest management plan for a target agricultural product

 with a defined pest suite in one geographic location. Each student must identify their own target system. 

Each student must have a unique target system. Identify the following components: 1. An agricultural product,

 sourced from a plant or animal a. can be the plant or animal in its entirety b. annual crops, vegetables c.

 perennial crops, fruits, cut flowers d. livestock raised for meat, leather, wool, feathers, e. livestock raised for dairy, 

eggs etc. f. forestry g. other options may be possible – just ask 2. A geographic location h. the agricultural product must be produced, manufactured or stored at that location i. can be a factory transforming raw materials into a derived product, or a handling or storage facility. Only needs presence of pests that require control methods. j. the area of production is not important, though recognise issues of pest management can vary according to area, relative to other nearby land uses. k. the industry can be “embryonic”, i.e. very early in development. 3. The suite of pests l. must attack the plant or animal, source of the agricultural product m. list the major pest species n. list the minor pests that become important when the major pests are controlled 4. Previous and current pest control methods o. consider history of use p. list positive and negative attributes of each method q. record or consider interactions of each method, should they be used together 5. Economics r. Consider the value of the product, and the variation in value s. Reflect on risk and scale of pest damage t. Include estimates of the costs of pest control methods u. Contemplate indirect costs to others (community, environment etc.) 6. Missing information v. Given requirements of IPM, is there any missing information? w. Missing information may be unknown worldwide, or known in one (some) locations, but unknown for the chosen location. Structure: The format of the term paper is flexible. The most important consideration is that the format and flow of information in term paper is sensible to the reader. You may write a traditional scientific report, however, this format fits original research better and may not be suitable to the information you find. Consider a review style paper, such as those in review only journals of Annual Review of Entomology, Quarterly Review of Biology, or Agricultural and Resource Economics Review. Many journals that focus on original research will also publish reviews. Only the follow sections are essential. Abstract or Summary* Maximum of 300 words, encapsulates the entire paper. Aim* States the purpose of the paper succinctly; two to five sentences, depending on complexity of study. Include a statement of the Methods. This could be a section, or could be incorporated in one or more sections (eg describe methods for each section with each section). Either way, you must describe how you searched for and processed information. Otherwise, you should include General background of study, such as the origin and development (e.g. breeding) of the target agricultural product, the development in the target geographic location, and the suite of pest species and their origins. Discuss relative importance of each pest species, and how this may have changed over time (due to pest control methods, arrivals of invasive/global pests) in the target geographic location. Compare and contrast pest control methods used and level of utility and efficacy. Identify areas requiring further research. Describe the IPM plans, if any, for the target agricultural product, geographic location and pest species. If there is more than one IPM plan, compare and contrast them. If there is no IPM plan, contemplate the factors for this absence. Consider IPM plants developed for the agricultural product and pest for other geographic locations. Cogitate over the information required to implement, with or without local adaptation, to the target geographic location. Length: 12 A4 pages, not including references 10 point font minimum (preferably 11 or 12 point) 50 references * Follow the style of one journal, for the structure and the references. Name the journal.
