ANTB26: The Middle East & North Africa: Past and Present FINAL TAKE HOME EXAM
DUE: Monday morning 11 am, April 19 via assignment link – NO LATE SUBMISSIONS ACCEPTED WORTH: 25% of overall course grade
This exam was designed to be completed in a 3hr seated final exam, but I am providing the class one week to work on this exam. Keep this in mind when allocating time for this exam.
This final consists of a series of short essay questions. You will choose 3 out of the 4 to answer (10 pts. each, 30 pts total). You should be sure to define key terms AND illustrate your arguments with specific examples (ethnographic data) from your readings and online course content. You should not be drawing on any material from outside the course for this exam. In illustrating your main point, you should not use the same example in more than one question. You want to highlight the breadth of your understanding of our course content.
Each question should not be longer than 350wrds (that is 1,050wrds total for the exam). Make an effort to stick to word limits and include a word count after each response. Your exam should be 12pt font, double spaced and uploaded in .doc or compatible format. Remember to cite where necessary but do not unnecessarily quote long sections of text. You will be evaluated on your ability to SYNTHESIZE the materials from the course readings and discussions into your own arguments.
1. In each section of this term, the issue of embodiment has been highlighted as something that shapes social life for individuals in the Middle East. Compare two instances in our coursework where embodiment was used in analysis to highlight what the concept can offer to anthropological study.
2. What does a focus on intersectionality contribute to analysis when trying to understand the social world of individuals?
3. We read early on that the study of Orientalism has shaped how anthropological work is conducted in the Middle East. Through discussing a specific example, argue how the concept has influenced the study of peoples in/from Arab majority societies?
4. Why would an anthropologist focus on every-day practices in the anthropological study of resistance or governing in the Middle East?
